  5. This periodic posting serves as an introduction to newsgroup
  6. comp.os.research.  A set of companion postings, the Frequently
  7. Answered Questions for comp.os.research, summarises some of the past
  8. discussions in the group.

  10. Comp.os.research is a moderated Usenet newsgroup created to foster the
  11. discussion of and exchange of information on topics in the field of
  12. operating systems research.  The moderator is Darrell Long
  13. <darrell@cse.ucsc.edu> of the University of California at Santa Cruz.

  15. As far as moderation policy is concerned, the following two principles
  16. are applied to each article submitted for posting: is it interesting?
  17. is it related to research?
  18.  
  19. Job announcements will be posted if they are related to operating
  20. systems research; blatantly commercial postings are not acceptable.

  22. Calls for papers for most conferences and journals related to OS
  23. research will be posted.  This is fairly broadly interpreted, since OS
  24. research is a large field.
  25.  
  26. Smart alec comments are generally filed unceremoniously in /dev/null.
  27.  
  28. Finally, discussions are cut off when the signal-to-noise ratio falls
  29. below a certain (fairly subjective) level.  Please consider setting
  30. the Followup-To: line whenever discussion drifts away from operating
  31. systems research.

  33. This posting, like much of Usenet, is maintained on a purely volunteer
